DRIVE-IN-CINEMA

Residents of Islamabad and Rawalpindi will get  to enjoy their first drive-in cinema experience in Islamabad’s F-9 Park.

The drive-in cinema has a capacity for 200 cars, carrying a maximum of three people. The project is a joint venture of the Capital Development Authority (CDA), telecom operator Jazz, and a private entity Active media.

Newly appointed Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed and Chairman of the CDA who is also the Chief Commissioner of Islamabad Amer Ali Ahmed along with the organizers cut the ribbon to inaugurate the facility.

“I congratulate the organizers for bringing back a retro favorite to offer the mass entertainment during the new normal,” Sheikh Rashid said.

Speaking at the movie screening, Jazz CCO, Asif Aziz, said, “As a digital lifestyle partner, Jazz realized that the countryside social distancing measures limited entertainment avenues for the public.”

THE DRIVE IN CINEMA

The cinema will operate three days a week from Friday to Sunday. Moreover, it will follow SOP’s for social distancing. The partners have taken this move to provide the common folks with some family entertainment with the closure of the traditional cinemas due to COVID-19.

The project, will be a pilot for similar cinemas across the country. Jazz is also trying to promote e-payments and will refund half of the ticket price initially. The cinemas will screen movies from 5.30 in the evening.

CDA Chairman Amer Ali Ahmed  played main role in launching the project. In addition, he said that the drive-in cinema will provide entertainment to residents of Rawalpindi and Islamabad. Hence, providing a safe environment during stressing time of Covid-19.

He said while sitting in their cars people will watch movies on big screen. Moreover, they will use a radio set for audio. “If this project attracts people, we will set up two or three more such facilities in Islamabad,” he said.

Replying to a question, the CDA director general, said: “This is not a commercial project and the ticket price will be nominal and affordable.”

DRIVE-IN-CINEMAS :A GOOD IDEA

The open-air drive-in cinemas are nothing new and are present in many parts of the world. However, in Pakistan, the concept is relatively new as the focus has always been on the traditional cinemas. People will be able to enjoy time with their families. Consequently, maintaining social distancing and getting good quality entertainment. Such a break from the COVID stress is very welcome.
